Check out some of the highlights from
TENANAN
at the UCSC Music Center Recital Hall.

Tenanan (Mother) features the UCSC Mecate Ensemble, including faculty, staff and graduate students of the UC Santa Cruz community, in a premiere performance composed by Stephanie F. Valadez, a Ph.D. student in Cross-Cultural Musicology with a Designated Emphasis in Critical Race and Ethnic Studies. Tenanan features mixed ensemble, spoken word and dance, with choreography by Valadez and Malena Vega, and is accompanied by various other works of Latin American popular music.

Tenanan intertwines child’s play with the harsh realities facing many parents. This semi-autobiographical work draws from real-life experiences of adversity, immigrant life, absent parents, gender violence and economic crisis, all while reminiscing on the beauty, silliness and chaos of being a parent.
